These steps will work for any version of Windows 10, but are required for computers set to Windows 10 S-Mode.

Microsoft has more information on S Mode in their FAQ page.

Installing GlobalProtect on Windows in S-Mode:

  1. Open the Microsoft Store app from your Start menu

  2. In the upper right, search for "GlobalProtect" and select the GlobalProtect app result that appears

  3. The page for the GlobalProtect app from Palo Alto Networks will open

  4. Click the Get button to install the app

    If prompted to sign in with a Microsoft account, you do not need to.

  5. When the installation completes, click to launch the app

  6. Click the link in the app to go to Network & Internet VPN Settings


  7. Click Yes in the prompt confirming that you want to switch apps

  8. Now in Settings, click the + icon to add a new VPN connection


  9. Choose the following settings, then click Save
    • VPN Provider: GlobalProtect
    • Connection name: uavpn.albany.edu
    • Server name or address: uavpn.albany.edu

  10. Select the new uavpn.albany.edu VPN connection and click Connect

  11. Log in with your University at Albany NetID and password when prompted

  12. You should now be connected

Disconnecting from the VPN

  1. Select the GlobalProtect icon in the notification area at the lower right to bring up the VPN connection window.
  2. Click Disconnect to end the VPN session.

Connecting to the VPN

  1. To open the GlobalProtect VPN client:
    1. Start > All Apps > GlobalProtect
  2. Click the link in the app to go to Network & Internet VPN Settings
  3. Click Yes in the prompt confirming that you want to switch apps
  4. Select the new uavpn.albany.edu VPN connection and click Connect
  5. The GlobalProtect icon will be minimized in the notification area at the lower right.
