Manage Settings for the My Courses Module

To enable things like copying a course from a previous semester or revisiting student work submissions to write a letter of recommendation or perhaps simply to see how you did it in the past, your Blackboard courses are retained on the system for several years.  The following guidance will help you manage your course list so it's not so long and cumbersome.

Group by Term

First, we highly recommend that you group your courses by term.  This is usually a semester term, like "Fall 2017," but it could also be a categorical representation such as "Course Development."  Grouping your courses by term allows you to collapse and expand that term as needed to view links to your courses when you need them.  This is all set up through the Manage My Courses Module Settings button (go ahead, say it five times fast!).

  1. On the Blackboard Academics tab you will see the My Courses module on the right side of the page.

  2. Click the Manage My Courses Module Settings button that appears when you mouse-over the upper right corner of the My Courses module (it looks like a gear sprocket and a button label may pop-up).

  3. Under TERMS check the box for Group by Term.

    Notes:
    1. You can de-select any specific term if you do not wish for it to be displayed in My Courses.
    2. Scroll down the page further to de-select specific courses that you don't want listed in My Courses (they will remain on Blackboard, just not in your list but you can re-add them later, if you wish).

  4. Click Submit when you have made the necessary selections.

Once you have grouped your courses by term, you can collapse/expand the list of courses for that term to establish a cleaner My Courses list.

By default your course list displays the title of the course only but you can choose to have the course ID also displayed.  For example, the convention for AAFS-286, African Civilizations in spring 2020 is:

  • Course Title: Spring 2020-African Civilizations
  • Course ID: 2203-AAFS-286-xxxx (where xxxx = class number)

In some cases, it may be useful for you to be able to see the Course ID on the My Courses lists, especially if you're teaching multiple sections of the same course.  In this case, the title of the course would be identical for all sections, making it difficult for you to know which is which, until you navigate into the course (or even deeper, into the Roster or Grade Center!).

Use the Manage My Courses Module Settings options to select the attributes of your course(s) that you'd like to have displayed on the My Courses List.

  1. On the Blackboard Academics tab you will see the My Courses module on the right side of the page.

  2. Click the Manage My Courses Module Settings button that appears when you mouse-over the upper right corner of the My Courses module (it looks like a gear sprocket and a button label may pop-up).

  3. Scroll to down to Edit Course List.

Here you can click the checkbox for Course ID for your course(s) for which you want to display the Course ID on the MY Courses list.
You can also deselect an entire course row, if you'd like to remove that course from your My Courses list - be careful, though!  You don't want to do that for an active course.
