Since many files that are not saved properly end up in the Temp or Temporary Internet Files folder, accessing that then saving the files to a desired location can often recover them.

Chrome

  1. Download a file from any online source
  2. In the downloads pane that appears at the bottom of Chrome, right click the newly downloaded file and select "Open Containing Folder"
  3. The temporary folder should be available for access to look for the original desired file

Firefox

  1. Download a file from any online source
  2. In the downloads window or pane, right click the newly downloaded file and select "Open Containing Folder"
  3. The temporary folder should be available for access to look for the original desired file

Internet Explorer

  1. In the Tools menu (possibly a gear icon in the top right), click Internet Options
  2. In the Browsing History section, click the Settings button
  3. Click View Files to open the Temporary Internet Files folder
  4. The temporary folder should be available for access to look for the original desired file
